Epilogue Summary: “Message from Salva Dut”

Rochester, New York, 2010

This story is based on the life of Salva Dut. In this epilogue, he thanks those who helped him along the way: The Red Cross, the Moore family, St. Paul Episcopal Church, the community of Rochester, and his community college, Monroe. He also thanks the board of Water for Sudan Inc. and the many rotary and civic clubs, as well as individuals. He encourages young people to persevere as he did.

Author’s Note Summary

In an author’s note, Park explains that the war taking place in the story is called the Second Sudanese Civil War. While the war was complex and involved many competing factions and shifting alliances, its fundamental conflict was between the Arabic-speaking, predominantly Muslim government in the north and a coalition of non-Muslim tribes in the south. The war began in 1983 and continued for nearly 20 years, during which time many people millions of people were killed, tortured, or enslaved. It ended in 2002 when the United States passed the Sudan Peace Act, accusing the North of killing over 2 million people. The South was granted a referendum as to whether to secede.

The current Sudanese war in Darfur is separate and not covered under the peace act, but its underlying ethnic and cultural tensions are the same. Sudan is the largest country in Africa and the 10th largest in the world.

Salva’s real organization is “Water for South Sudan,” and it has drilled dozens of wells for the Dinkas and the Nuers. The first well was for Salva’s village, and he currently spends half the year in the United States collecting money and the other in Sudan drilling wells.

Epilogue and Author’s Note Analysis

Though the novel is a work of fiction, it is closely based on the real-life experiences of Salva Dut, who gave extensive interviews to author Linda Sue Park as she worked on the book. This final section explains how the novel correlates to the real world. In an author’s note, Park details the history of war in Sudan from the 1980s, when the book’s events begin, to the present day. Writing with Dut in an addendum, she also thanks the many people—including thousands of schoolchildren, who have raised money for Dut’s nonprofit, Water for South Sudan. This author’s note makes the case that the book is not only based on real events but also continues to influence real events—changing the world it describes by inspiring its readers to help.

Salva Dut offers a message of his own as well, thanking the people and organizations who helped him on his way and advising young readers of this middle-grade novel to persevere through life’s challenges. This final message recalls the theme of Perseverance as a Long Walk and encourages readers to emulate the novel’s protagonist by placing one foot in front of the other to keep going when life gets difficult.
