Grand Admiral Thrawn, a member of the Chiss race, is the first non-human officer ever to rise to the rank of Grand Admiral in the Imperial army. A fan-favorite in the Star Wars Expanded Universe and widely considered the best villain after Darth Vader, Thrawn is the primary antagonist of Heir to the Empire and its sequels, earning the series the title of the Thrawn trilogy. Timothy Zahn portrays Thrawn’s appearance as off-putting to most of the characters, with his blue skin and red eyes. He is calculating and manipulative with exceptional powers of perception. Pellaeon calls Thrawn “possibly the greatest military mind the Empire ha[s] ever seen” (6). Thrawn cultivates knowledge—particularly knowledge of individual cultures gleaned from their art—to discover a way to control them. He tells Pellaeon: “Learn about art, Captain […] When you understand a species’ art, you understand that species” (14). Art becomes a weapon to a man like Thrawn, who translates knowledge of a species’ art into a tool for manipulation and dominance. Thrawn is the most cerebral of the Star Wars villains.
Captain Pellaeon serves on board the Chimaera as Thrawn’s second-in-command. Having served in the Imperial army before the Rebels’ defeat of the Empire, Pellaeon knows and values the order and hierarchy of the army as it existed before the rise of the Rebel Alliance as opposed to the relative chaos left in its wake. He served under the volatile Darth Vader, so he lives in the shadow of fear, worried with every failure of his army that Thrawn will lash out in anger. It is primary via Pellaeon’s perspective that Zahn reveals Thrawn’s character and plans.
Joruus C’baoth is the clone of a Jedi knight. He possesses all the Jedi’s power and has assumed his identity. The real Joruus C’baoth was a Jedi of the Old Republic who died during the Siths’ purging of the Jedi, murdered by Thrawn himself. The Joruus C’baoth that Thrawn and Pellaeon meet is a clone who killed the Guardian that the Emperor left to protect his hidden tools and treasures. Clones, Pellaeon knows, were known to be mentally unstable, as evidenced in Joruus’s obsession with finding the Skywalkers and his bursts of temper with Thrawn and Pellaeon.
Luke Skywalker and Leia Skywalker are twin siblings, the heroes of both Heir to the Empire and the original Star Wars trilogy. Luke was raised on Tatooine by his aunt and uncle, while Leia was raised as Princess Leia Organa by her adopted parents; they were separated at birth to prevent their father, Darth Vader, from discovering them. Luke has been trained as a Jedi by Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi; Leia has Jedi powers but is only just exploring them at this point in their story.
Han Solo is a hero of the novel and the original Star Wars trilogy, a former smuggler who joined forces with the Skywalkers after agreeing to transport Luke and Obi-Wan Kenobi on their quest to save Leia in the film, Star Wars: A New Hope. He was general in the Rebel (later, the New Republic) army; he has retired from that post but continues to go on missions for the New Republic, especially to meet with smugglers in an attempt to gain their allegiance and rebuild the economy. Han is Leia’s husband and father of the twins she carries during Heir to the Empire.
The trio have been heroes of the Rebellion since the defeat of the Empire and, in the subsequent five years, they help the new government continue to drive out the Empire and to rebuild politically, economically, and socially.
Talon Karrde and Mara Jade form important secondary roles in Heir to the Empire, and their arcs hint at future importance to the narrative of the trilogy. Talon Karrde is a smuggler boss, and many smugglers presume that he has gained enough power to take over the role left open by Jabba the Hutt’s death in Return of the Jedi. Karrde uses knowledge and secrets to gain power, observing people and events wherever he can to glean information. In the beginning of the novel, he has the potential to become a secondary antagonist to support Thrawn’s endeavors, but he chooses to help Han, Lando, and Luke instead. He knows he should hand Luke over to Thrawn to protect himself and his business, but he struggles to decide between his own best interest and his honor, ultimately choosing the latter. He highly values hospitality and debts of honor, refusing to harm anyone who is a guest of his or to whom he or one of his employees owes a debt.
Mara Jade is Karrde’s second-in-command. Karrde knows she hates Luke violently and that she wants Luke dead, but he does not know why. Mara struggles with her desire to kill Luke, but she honors her word to Karrde. After being stuck together in the forest for several days, Mara admits to Luke that she hates him because she lost everything when he killed the Emperor. She was the Emperor’s Hand, someone with whom he could communicate over great distances, and in this role, she completed jobs for him that no one else could do. One such job was to kill Luke. She had positioned herself as a dancer for Jabba the Hutt to do so, but she was unable to convince Jabba to allow her on the speeder that would take Luke to execution. Because of this, Luke was able to complete his escape plan and rescue Han, and Mara failed in her mission. Few people knew her true role, so when the Emperor was killed, she had to take any job she could until she found her way to Karrde. Mara’s character arc in Heir to the Empire moves her from a place of vengeance and continued loyalty to a deceased Emperor toward personal autonomy, admitting the truth of her hatred to Luke and choosing to save his life in the forest. It is clear she will continue to play an important role in the future.
