Chapters 36-39Chapter Summaries & Analyses

Chapter 36 Summary

Enzo expresses his love of walking in Seattle rain and taking in the smells. Denny starts to walk them down unfamiliar paths and longer than average distances, until they finally arrive at the site of Eve’s funeral. Maxwell enlists a couple of toughs to confront Denny and keep him from the ceremony. Denny watches it all from a distance.

Chapter 37 Summary

Enzo feels exhausted after the long walk. He’s been hiding the pain of arthritis and hip dysplasia. He distrusts doctors, and recalls an occasion at the Spangle farm when a doctor clipped off part of his right claw without anesthetic. He thinks of Eve and her approach to medicine and mortality.

Chapter 38 Summary

Denny’s restraining order keeps him separated from Zoe for months. They exchange letters via their lawyers. He makes excuses to Zoe that his absence is due to touring the European racing circuit. Only Enzo gets to visit Maxwell and Trish’s to see Zoe.

Chapter 39 Summary

Enzo sleeps in Zoe’s room at Maxwell and Trish’s house. During the night, Zoe surrounds him with stuffed animals to keep him company. While Enzo is touched by the gesture, he spots the replacement zebra. His night is sleepless.

He overhears a conversation between Maxwell and Trish. She suspects that Annika isn’t as innocent as she claims. She also pities Denny, though Maxwell is not as sympathetic. Enzo hears all the evidence he needs to know that they manipulated the timing of the lawsuit to their ends.

Enraged, Enzo takes one of Maxwell’s offered hot peppers, and leaves his diarrhea on the good carpet. He sees this act as a triumph over the demon zebra.

Chapters 36-39 Analysis

These chapters highlight the limitations of Enzo’s ability to protect those he loves. Unlike Denny, Enzo is allowed to visit Zoe at the Twins’ house. However, the fact that Zoe surrounds Enzo with her stuffed animals suggests that she is the one protecting him. The conversation between Trish and Maxwell also showcases Enzo’s helplessness. Unable to inform Denny about the Twins’ manipulation, Enzo does the only thing he is able to do, which is make a mess on the carpet.

The return of the zebra occurs without incident. In contrast to its first appearance, the stuffed doll is inert and harmless. Enzo’s victory indicates that he has somehow triumphed over this symbol, though the full meaning of such an act is not yet apparent.
