Discussion/Analysis Prompt

Bob experiences significant character growth throughout the novel as he learns to cope with his past and overcome prejudices that prevent him from connecting to Julia. What changes occur in Bob by the conclusion of the novel? Consider his early experiences, his mistrust of humans, and his statements when considering your response.

Teaching Suggestion: Consider asking students to first analyze the way Bob projects himself at the beginning of the novel, the statements by others about him, and the way his own thoughts impact his behavior. Then ask students to consider Bob’s transformation and the events that are a catalyst for the transformation in Bob.

Differentiation Suggestion: Students who need additional assistance with analysis may find it beneficial to create a before and after t-chart to describe the behavioral and attitude changes in Bob throughout the novel. Consider permitting students to work in pairs as they analyze the text.

Use this activity to engage all types of learners, while requiring that they refer to and incorporate details from the text over the course of the activity.

ACTIVITY: “A Medal for Bob”

In this activity, students will analyze the heroism of Bob and create a symbolic medal to commemorate his achievements.

Bob portrays himself as a carefree, independent dog who often misbehaves, but when the hurricane threatens the lives of the animals in the zoo, Bob quickly takes action to rescue the zoo animals. Reflect on Bob’s acts of heroism in the novel and design a symbolic award for Bob based on his actions. Consider these points as you design your medal:

  • Whom does Bob rescue at the zoo and why?
  • Why is Bob’s heroism important to his self-image?
  • In what way does Bob overcome a great challenge?
  • Whose life does Bob impact significantly?
  • What symbolism might you use to represent Bob’s heroism?

Present your award to your peers, describing the symbolic significance of the items represented on the medal to Bob.

Teaching Suggestion: It may be beneficial for students to consider symbols that are important to Bob to incorporate in their medal by reviewing the metaphorical language Bob uses throughout the novel. Also consider having students discuss Bob’s heroic acts and how they might be incorporated into the final design of the medal.

Differentiation Suggestion: Students who require an additional challenge can analyze the metaphorical language used by Bob to determine the meaning behind the metaphors, the importance of the symbols to Bob, and how the symbols apply to Bob’s identity as a dog.
